Varifocals: Are they good? Do They Work? Are They Worth It?

Varifocals might just be one of the cleverest inventions in modern eyewear—giving you clear vision at all distances without having to juggle multiple pairs of specs. But they’re not magic, and they’re certainly not all made equal.

Whether you’ve been told you need varifocals or you’re just curious, this guide will help you figure out if they’re right for you, why they can cost a small fortune, and why getting them tailored at Doctor Oculus is a no-brainer. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Are Varifocals Good?

Varifocals, or progressive lenses, are like having three pairs of glasses rolled into one: perfect for near, intermediate, and distance vision. Forget about the old-school bifocals with their tell-tale line across the middle; varifocals are sleek, seamless, and a lot more discreet.

When fitted properly, they’re a dream. You can read a book, doomscroll social media, or spot your mate waving from across the park - all without swapping your specs. But here’s the catch: if they’re not tailored just right, you'll end up feeling like the world’s gone wobbly.

How Do Varifocals Work?

Simply put, the prescription varies in focal power depending on where you look through the lens - hence the name varifocal.

This usually means that the prescription at the point you naturally look through a lens will be calibrated for clear distance vision.

The point at which you would look through for reading your phone will naturally be up to 20mm lower, so the prescription here is increased to help you read.

Are Varifocals Worth It?

That depends on many factors such as your prescription, lifestyle, expectations and goals.

For somebody who likes their glasses to "just work", or people who are irritated by the constant on-and-off of reading glasses they're absolutely worth it.

Imagine never loosing your reading glasses again, because they're already on your face, quietly getting on with the job. The best part is that because they stay on your face, they're less likley to meet their demise by being sat on and broken.

Are All Varifocals The Same?

Not even close. Lenses from high-street or online glasses sellers tend to use basic designs that often leave you squinting, tilting your head, or wondering why everything’s gone wonky. They just about do the job and they give varifocals a bad reputation. Online measurements are total guesswork, and you’ll likely end up frustrated or back for a refund.

Doctor Oculus Varifocals are top-quality lens designs tailored to your exact needs. Whether you’re driving, reading, or working, we’ll make sure your lenses are as comfortable and functional as they are stylish. It’s like wearing made to measure clothing versus a Shein special.

Are Varifocals Always The Right Choice?

The short answer is no: varifocals aren’t perfect for everything.

For computer users, varifocals can leave you tilting your head to find the right focus point which causes neck strain and discomfort. A better option may be occupational lenses which are designed for closer ranges, offering a wider field of view and a more natural posture.

For Hobbyists who love sewing, painting, or tinkering in your workshop, varifocals might not give you the wide, uninterrupted focus you need. Again, indoor-specific lenses like occupationals could be a better shout.

Don't worry, it's our job to educate you about your choices and guide you to the best decision.

So why do these tiny bits of glass (or plastic) cost more than single vision lenses? Well, it’s not just about what you can see - it’s about what goes into making them work:

The Big Question!

Varifocals with maximum clarity and minimal distortions are the result of complex calculations performed by super-computers, and manufactured using highly calibrated machinery.

Precision Engineering

At Doctor Oculus, we don’t just slap any varifocal into your glasses. We make meticulous adaptations - the position your frames sit, working distances and even your posture. Every tweak makes a big difference.

Customisation

Budget lenses are irritating to use and more prone to wear and tear. We really believe you'll be impressed by the quality of our lenses which is why they come with a 2-year scratch warranty, so you know they’re built to last.

Durability

Choosing Doctor Oculus Varifocals
